A Swing You Can Trust: A Breakthrough Approach for Confident, Low-Scoring Play
How do you develop a “phenomenal” golf swing? By mastering the “Core Four:” Swing Motion, Setup, Turn, Weight Shift.
According to much sought-after golf teacher and author of A Swing You Can Trust, Roberto Borgatti, mastery of what he calls the Core Four, all independent elements of the golf swing (i.e., the full swing), will result in a swing you can always trust.
Below is a brief description of Roberto’s Core Four swing technique instruction, as detailed in A Swing You Can Trust.
Swing Motion (Chapter 1)
Roberto defines swing motion as “how your body moves through space, even when you are not holding a club.” He likens it to dancing. According to Roberto, “The key factor for a correct swing is developing a feel for how your entire body moves from the beginning, through an intermediate point, to the end of the swing.” Included in this chapter is a description and great visual demonstrations of the swing motion drill to help golfers develop that feel.
Set Up (Chapter 2)
According to Roberto, proper setup “includes posture, grip, aim and ball position.”
Set up begins with proper posture – i.e., how you address the ball. It begins with a “primary tilt” toward the ball, and a “secondary tilt” of the spine away from the target.
Next up is the grip. Roberto states that “holding the club in a manner that maximizes stability and leverage must be Priority No. 1.” But what does that mean? According to Roberto, it means that “the golf club will sit stably in your hands with minimum effort or pressure.”
With regards to aim, Roberto states that the objective is to “aim the clubface at the target” with “your body (stance, hips, and shoulders) aligned ‘parallel left.’”
On ball stance, Roberto goes through the technicalities of whether the ball should be forward or back in stance. Ultimately, he writes: “Where to stand and when to strike is entirely up to you, but it is essential to establish a standard placement, one we can count on.”
Turn (Chapter 3)
Roberto considers the turn a basic skill in creating an effective and powerful swing: “a good turn is as essential to the swing as the air you breathe.” Because the body turns around the spine in the golf swing, Roberto states that the “key to power” is “turning your shoulders perpendicular to your spine.”
Weight Shift (Chapter 4)
Roberto states that “the essential key is that a subtle weight shift should occur primarily from the waist up. It is your upper body that moves, shifting the center of gravity.” In order to achieve the proper weight shift, your weight must be “centered over the balls of your feet.”
What is the result of mastering the Core Four? According to Roberto, “When properly executed and coordinated, they cause hundreds of successive movements to occur fluidly, without conscious effort.” And that, is a swing you can trust.
A Swing You Can Trust does more than teach you how to develop a phenomenal golf swing through mastery of the Core Four. In the book, Roberto provides great instruction on several crucial elements of your game including: The Full Swing (discussed above); The Short Game; Special Shots and Drills; and Golf Fitness Training.
