Courtesy of The First Tee of Metropolitan New York

The Fourth is excited to have the opportunity to learn more about The First Tee of Metropolitan New York. To share that knowledge with The Fourth Tee Community, we conducted a Q&A with Todd Bordonaro, Director of Instruction, The First Tee Coach and National Trainer for The First Tee of Metropolitan New York.

The Fourth Tee: Welcome to the Fourth Tee. Tell us, what is The First Tee?

Todd Bordonaro: The First Tee is a youth development organization that teaches young people life skills through the game of golf.

TFT: Where is The First Tee of Metropolitan New York located?

TB: We are headquartered in the Bronx. We have ten different locations throughout the tri-state area – that is, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

TFT: Is there a membership requirement? And, if so, what is it?

TB: There is no specific membership requirement. Once a child signs up for a The First Tee class he/she is automatically a member.

TFT: What are some of the key benefits of being a part of The First Tee of Metropolitan New York?

TB: The First Tee participants receive instruction from The First Tee Recognized Coaches and PGA Professionals. We offer a wide array of instructional and playing opportunities. Participants are entitled to reduced fees for playing and practicing at all our facilities.

TFT: What are the non-golf advantages of being part of The First Tee of Metropolitan New York?

TB: We offer mentoring, tutoring, SAT prep classes, an honor roll program and several The First Tee National opportunities.

TFT: Is it a year long program? Or is it seasonal?

TB: We run programs all year long. In the winter we have indoor fitness classes. We also offer programming at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan.

TFT: Tell us about the 2011 Summer Golf School program.

TB: Intended for juniors age 9 to 17, the Summer Golf School is designed for kids interested in strengthening their golf game, making new friends and having fun. All schools are divided into nine week-long sessions throughout the summer season. The daily school routine consists of PGA level golf instruction, skills and rules review and guided play on our 9-hole course.

Courtesy of The First Tee of Metropolitan New York

TFT: Is there an enrollment deadline?

TB: June 27 – August 22 (9 weeks).

TFT: Do kids get to compete with each other? Or is this just a learning program?

TB: Our Advanced program offers participants a chance to compete on the golf course 3 times per week.

TFT: What is the Players’ Golf Academy?

TB: The Player’s Golf Academy is an exclusive program targeted for the aspiring junior golfer. Designed for students who wish to improve their golf skill in a smaller class setting, The Academy offers one-on-one instruction and attention to technique and development. There are three levels to choose from: Apprentice, Pro and Super Pro.

TFT: Can you share with us some notable accomplishments of kids who have passed through your program?

TB: Many of our participants play on their high school and college golf teams. They have received scholarships and have been selected for national opportunities, including The First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, Life Skills and Leadership Academies and Future Leaders Forum. Of recent note, Paul Spano received the first ever The First Tee Outstanding Participant Award. This is a national award. Paul received a $20K scholarship. Last summer, Kuriko Tsukiyama was the youngest ever player to win the New Jersey Women’s Amateur Golf Championship. This is Why I Love Golf – The Silence. Nature.

Yesterday, after a two-year hiatus, my golf clubs finally saw the light of day and I re-immersed myself in the pure joy a true golfer feels when on the course.

To mark my auspicious return to the game, I went to breezy Clearview Golf Course, located a heartbeat away from the Throgs Neck bridge in Queens, NY, armed with my handy DSLR.  My round was in the mid afternoon on an almost deserted course (thank you! holiday weekend) in pristine condition.

I shot the following video and want you to listen to why the game of golf is better than any.  The Silence, punctuated by the sound of Nature.  Golf is Serenity. Golf Is Nature.

TFT:  In November 2009, the resort held an event “In Celebration of Chocolate.”  Another “didn’t know that” moment, but, The Fourth Tee discovered that Kohler is also in the chocolate business (http://www.kohlerchocolates.com/).  Were the chocolates at the 2009 event all Kohler chocolates?

Village of Kohler May 27-29

(Courtesy Kohler Co.)

TACR: Yes, the “In Celebration of Chocolate” event was quite popular at the resort. Guests savored gourmet desserts, from cakes and tortes to pastries, candies and specialty items – especially our very own delectable KOHLER Original Recipe Chocolates.

(Courtesy Kohler Co.)

The Kohler Co. confectionery business began with an internal team of chefs, food and beverage executives, and other resort professionals led by Director of Culinary Arts Ulrich Koberstein. The finest ingredients have been selected and variations of recipes tested to create each KOHLER Original Recipe Chocolate – seeking to explore limitless opportunity in taste and texture. Signature lines include Terrapins, Garden Ganache, Dark Mountain Toffees, Baking Chocolate, Toffee Bark, and Terrapin Trail Mix.

The KOHLER Original Recipe Chocolates are available at the Craverie Chocolatier Café, located at the Shops at Woodlake. The open production kitchen at the Craverie displays for the public, the sights and smells of the art of making chocolate.

The story of KOHLER Original Recipe Chocolates
After observing the creation of chocolates in a nearby community, which sparked his recollection that taste seldom matched anticipation, Herb Kohler decided that the world needed a better “Turtle.”

He discussed the idea with Ulrich Koberstein, Group Director-Culinary Arts, at The American Club®, the Midwest’s only AAA Five Diamond resort hotel, and together they felt the chefs would enjoy the challenge of trying to create the best in the world. Hundreds of samples later, most of which were tasted by both Mr. Kohler and his Director, they launched KOHLER Original Recipe Chocolates with a batch of “Terrapins” that guests of the hotel and associates of Kohler Co. acknowledged unparalleled.

Many batches later, those original Terrapins have become the basis for an emerging chocolate business that refuses to clutter the marketplace; rather, it seeks to explore limitless opportunity in taste and texture with natural raw materials. This is the challenge of the KOHLER® brand in all of its products and services: to bring to market and let the market decide whether KOHLER indeed is the leading edge that deserves its confidence. So grows KOHLER Original Recipe Chocolates.

TFT:  Can we expect another such event in the near future?

TACR: The American Club Resort is always planning events throughout the year and guests are invited to visit www.AmericanClub.com to learn more about our ongoing events. Guests should also know that they can purchase KOHLER Original Recipe Chocolates at the Craverie Chocolatier Café, located at the Shops at Woodlake as well as online at www.kohlerchocolates.com.

(Courtesy Kohler Co.)

TFT:  Finally, when, in your opinion, is the best time to visit to get in great dining, great events, golf, spa and great shopping?

TACR: The American Club Resort offers year-round activities and events, perfect for any traveler’s preference. Whether you are traveling with your family, celebrating a holiday or interested in a weekend getaway, the resort truly offers something for everyone, all year-round. For those who wish to experience Whistling Straits or Blackwolf Run, the courses are generally open April through October. Kohler Golf Academy offers lessons and clinics throughout the year. THE AMERICAN CLUB RESORT – A Kohler Experience (Part I: Golf & Spa)

(Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

Herb V. Kohler (Courtesy Kohler Co.)

When Americans hear the name Kohler, golf is probably not the first thing that comes to mind.  Instead, the majority of us primarily think of faucets when we think of Kohler.  And we wouldn’t be wrong.  Founded in 1873 by an Austrian immigrant, John Michael Kohler, and headquartered in Kohler, Wisconsin, the Kohler Company (“Kohler”) is a true American company with a storied history. Today, almost one-and-a-half centuries later, Herbert V. Kohler, grandson of founder John Michael Kohler and current President of Kohler Company, is leading the company’s charge into the business of golf resorts and destinations.

While many of us may not have automatically associated Kohler with golf resorts and golf courses, we definitely have heard of the renowned courses owned by Kohler.  Names like Whistling Straits and Black Wolf Run, both stops on the Major tours.  But Kohler’s golf experience is not limited to Stateside.  Kohler also owns The Old Course Hotel, Golf and Spa Resort in St. Andrews Scotland and operates The Dukes golf course there.

Old Course Hotel, St. Andrews, Scotland (Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

It’s been a while since we featured a destination golf resort and The Fourth Tee is excited to name The American Club Resort in Kohler, Wisconsin as our next Destination Golf pick and this one is a treat!  The Fourth Tee conducted an extensive Q&A with The American Club Resort.  There is so much to enjoy at The American Club Resort that this will be a two-part feature.  Tune in next week for Part II.

Whistling Straits logo (Courtesy Kohler Co.)

Straits Course (Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

The Fourth Tee:  Whistling Straits consists of two 18-hole courses:  the Straits Course and the Irish Course.  What are the fundamental the differences between these courses – i.e., in the way they play?

The American Club Resort:  The Straits Course has a higher course difficulty rating (77.2 to 75.6) and slope rating (152 to 146) than the Irish.

Irish Course (Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

TFT:  Which of the two is the most popular among your patrons?

TACR:  The Straits course has the highest level of demand due to largely to the notoriety it has gained by hosting major championships.

Shipwreck - Straits Course (Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

TFT:  In the past Whistling Straits has been the venue for several professional golf tournaments including the PGA Championship, U.S. Senior Open and the Palmer Cup.  Which of the two courses was featured more in these professional tourneys?

TACR:  Straits:  2004 and 2010 PGA Championships, 2007 US Senior Open, 2015 PGA Championship, 2020 Ryder Cup….Irish:  2005 Palmer Cup

TFT:  Will Whistling Straits be hosting any professional tournaments in near future?

TACR: Whistling Straits will be host to the 2015 PGA Championship and the 2020 Ryder Cup.

Gremlin's Ear - Straits Course (Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

TFT:  So, on some New York/New Jersey area courses, geese and, depending upon where you’re playing, the odd deer, tend to be a staple during a round of golf.  Sheep are featured in some of your photos.  Are they an indelible part of the Whistling Straits golf experience?

TACR:  They are.  The Scottish Blackface Sheep have become a signature part of the Whistling Straits experience.  They graze freely among the dunes of the golf course and are one of the most popular photos ops for our patrons.

Scottish Blackface Sheep grazing green side - Irish Course (Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

TFT:  In 2009, the Straits Course was ranked #3 in Golf Digest’s Top 100 rating.  What would you primarily attribute that ranking to?

TACR:  The combination of extraordinary golf course design and course maintenance, unique and memorable golf experience (walking only, professional caddies) and the growing tradition of hosting memorable major golf championships.

Straits Course - (Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

TFT:  In the same year and ranking, Golf Digest ranked the sister course, the Irish Course, #30 out of 100.  Although they both made the top 100 list, why do you think there is such a disparity in the rankings?

TACR:  The design, maintenance and experience elements are just as strong as the Straits….the large reason for this disparity is major championships hosted.  The Irish also has more traditional elements that you would typically see on other US courses, unlike the Straits.

Irish Course (Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

Blackwolf Run logo (Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

MeadowValleys Course (Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

TFT:  According to your site, both the Rivers Course and the Meadow Valleys Course will reopen this year.  How long have they been closed?

TACR: The Rivers and Meadow Valleys courses have been closed since 2008 undergoing renovation and refurbishment in preparation for the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open. Both courses open in late May for the 2011 season after a major maintenance project on all 36 holes.

Rivers Course (Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

TFT:  What’s better with the re-opening?

TACR: In 2009 and 2010, Blackwolf Run completed a major maintenance project on all 36 holes.  The courses now feature new grasses on greens, tees, fairways and selected rough areas. The improved surfaces will provide major championship-caliber playing surfaces.  All of the sand bunkers have been refurbished. There are five tee options, providing increased degrees of difficulty to players of all skill levels.

Rivers Course (Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

TFT:  The Original Championship Course, billed as a “composite course of the River and MeadowValleys,” will be hosting the U.S. Women’s Open in 2012.  When in 2012?

TACR: Site of the first Kohler-hosted golf championship in 1998, The Original Championship Course at Blackwolf Run welcomes the 67th U.S. Women’s Open, July 2-8, 2012. One of Pete Dye’s crowning achievements, Blackwolf Run opened for play in June 1988 and was named that year’s “Best New Public Course” by Golf Digest. It has continued to accumulate awards and honors including regularly being ranked on the list of “America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses” by Golf Digest and the “Top 100 You Can Play” by GOLF Magazine.

TFT:  Are you offering, or planning on offering, any special packages for out-of-towners who want to attend this event?

TACR: Those interested should check www.2012uswomensopen.com for updates.

TFT:  For interested readers, how soon in advance should they book their stay?

TACR:  Advanced booking for hotel golf packages is highly recommended.  To properly experience all that Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits have to offer, it is important to experience all 4 golf courses.  Our To Dye Four package is the perfect answer.

KOHLER GOLF ACADEMY

TFT:  Tell us about your golf academy.

TACR: Kohler Golf Academy, ranked in the top 50 best golf schools in America by GOLF Magazine, provides year-round golf instruction with practice facilities at Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits during the golf season and at the Kohler Golf Academy Indoor Studio, located at The Shops at Woodlake, during the off season.

KOHLER WATERS SPA

Kohler Waters Spa (Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

TFT:  The Fourth Tee must admit it is salivating at the photos of the spa experience at your resort.  Tell us more about Kohler Waters Spa’s hydrotherapy treatments.

Riverbath Room (Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

TACR: They are truly a one-of-a-kind experience.  Kohler Co. has been in the water experiential business for over 135 years so it only makes sense that the Kohler Waters Spa focuses on the most innovative and leading edge water therapies.  We specialize in the use of hot and cold to relax the body and aid in circulation.  Some are very quieting and centering of the body, some are simply outrageous and unexpected.

Kohler Custom Vichy Shower (Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

TFT:  What other amenities does Kohler Waters Spa offer?

TACR:  We feature the very highest quality treatments that are not only luxurious but are also very therapeutic to the body.  In addition, we feature our signature 30 foot pool with 8 foot waterfall.  Under the waterfall is a bench to sit on and relax while the water pours over your shoulders.

(Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

TACR (Cont’d):  We have steam, sauna, whirlpools and cool plunges in each respite area.  The men’s cool plunge is unique as it is 8 feet deep so you can jump right in!  We also feature a great enclosed rooftop deck with 16 foot fireplace and co-ed whirlpool for couples to relax and unwind from their hectic lives.

(Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

TFT:  The Fourth Tee noted that there are Kohler Waters Spas in Chicago, IL and St. Andrews, Scotland.  Are there any other spa locations in the pipeline? i.e., to additional U.S. locations?

TACR: We are always looking but it has to make sense for us and it has to be the right location.  There are no sites we can share with you right now, but one never knows when the next Kohler Waters Spa will “bubble up!”

(Courtesy of Kohler Co.)

GOLFING WOMEN: Taking Advantage of the Powerful Business Benefits of Golf

Golfing Women, a division of Sports Journeys, Inc., was founded in 2002 by Adrienne Wax and Leslie Andrews to “help other women take advantage of the powerful business benefits of golf.”  Adrienne Wax comes from over 25 years in the advertising industry and Leslie Andrews, a Class A LPGA Professional, has over 15 years experience in marketing and events management.  The Fourth Tee recently conducted the following Q&A with Golfing Women.

THE FOURTH TEE:  Thank you to Golfing Women for doing this informative Q&A for our readers, especially our female readers.  Golfing Women was formed, as your company’s bio states, specifically to expose the business benefits of golf to women.  Why do you think it is important for women, especially corporate women, to learn to play golf?

GOLFING WOMEN:   Because success in business is about building relationships.  And there’s no better way to build relationships with prospects or clients than spending a day on a golf course, attending a pro golf tournament together, etc.  Most men do this seamlessly, while women struggle to find a way to incorporate this valuable business tool into their business arsenal.

TFT:  Since 2002, your founding year, how successful can you say you’ve been in bringing new female golfers to the game based upon the use of your services?

GW:  We’ve had the opportunity to work with thousands of women in financial services, consulting, law, communications and other industries.  And while not every woman we meet embraces golf, the majority has jumped in with both feet.

TFT:  And, based on your experience, are they coming more for the recreational value of the game, or are they coming more from a business advantage perspective?

GW:  Both.  It’s great for business, and it’s a great way for friends and families to connect.

TFT:  Golfing Women offers several programs.  Let’s talk about your “Golf for Biz” program.  First, what are the top 3 must-knows to successfully use golf for business?

GW:  1: You don’t have to be a great golfer to use golf for business.  2: You need to know golf basics—essentially how to get the ball in the air fairly consistently—and the etiquette of how to act on a golf course. 3: If you’re not using golf as a business tool, you are missing out on a powerful opportunity.

TFT:  Explain how women in Corporate America can build better business relationships through golf.

GW:  I worked in marketing and advertising for years.  I have found that having good client relationships is most important when you face adversity.  The better the relationship, the easier it is to successfully address and defuse problems, which are inevitable.  And building relationships out of the office around a shared passion is a powerful relationship builder.

TFT:  Give an example of how women can use golf outings as a business tool.

GW:  We have a client who holds a yearly golf outing for its female employees and clients.  They invite both golfers and non-golfers, and we hold programs for both.  We end with an hour or so of a networking cocktail party where everyone who attended can share their day’s experiences.  The feedback we get from both sides is that the outing enables everyone to learn more about the other—and tie them closer together in business.

TFT:   Let’s talk about the one-on-one private coaching for business women.  Golfing Women is headquartered in East Hampton, NY, with offices in New York City and Boca Raton, FL.  Does this mean that your one-on-one private coaching services are limited to these cities or states?

GW:  We are based in the northeast the majority of the year and take our business to Florida in the winters.  So we can work with anyone in those areas during those times.  While it is impractical to do 1:1 private coaching in another area of the country, we can easily do full day events anywhere a client wants to hold them, any time of the year.

TFT:  The Fourth Tee is actually very curious about your Tee Off Tomorrow program.  Do you get a lot of requests for this service?  And, are they usually from first timers?

GW:  We designed this program after a client came to us saying they needed to play in an important golf outing in a month, but didn’t know how to play.  While it’s not our most sought after service, it’s really important for those people who need to learn how to get out on the course quickly.  We are re-branding this service FastTrack beginning this season.

TFT:  How long is one FastTrack (formerly Tee Off Tomorrow) session generally and, does it involve on-the-course instruction?

GW:  It’s customized, depending upon how long the person has before they need to be on course.  However, what’s critical is that we spend whatever time it takes to ensure that the person  can get the ball in the air on a fairly consistent basis and knows all the important etiquette.  With that, they’re ready to go.

TFT:  For my readers interested in taking golfing lessons through Golfing Women, are you only based in Florida for purposes of lessons?  Or are there other locations – and if so, where?

GW:  This season, Leslie Andrews, our president and Class A LPGA Professional, will be based at Randall’s Island in NYC the majority of her days, while spending one day a week as well out in the Hamptons .  Visit her new website, LeslieAndrewsGolf.com, where you will be able to book lessons online.  You can also reach her at 917-589-8579.

TFT:  Golfing Women also offers golf travel as one of its services.  The Fourth Tee has a feature page called Destination Golf and is curious to know what is the all-time most popular golf travel destination that Golfing Women has done for its patrons.

GW: I would have to say Ireland, to which we are returning this fall for a “play with the pro” trip to SW Ireland.  Pinehurst is a great destination here in the US which we have frequented as well.

TFT:  What courses do you expect to play during your Irish trip and, for interested readers, when can they expect to see details about the trip on your site?

GW:  This year’s trip will take us to SW Ireland, where we will play the well-known championship links courses including Ballybunion and Tralee, along with lesser-known local gems including Dingle Golf Links, Ceann Sibeal.  Located on the tip of the Dingle Peninsula, this magnificent links course is carved from the natural landscape of one of the most unspoiled parts of Europe.  As you play, the whole panorama of the Dingle Peninsula is revealed:  hidden bays with small fishing villages, glorious hills and mountains.  We should have more information about this trip posted in early summer.

TFT:  The Fourth Tee thanks Golfing Women for sharing their story with, especially, our female readers. To learn more about Golfing Women, visit www.sportsjourneys.com or send an email to info@golfingwomen.com.

The Fourth Tee recently went to an off-course golf event and found a marketing postcard about a company called Madcapz in the event’s goodie bag.  Madcapz.  Definitely an attention-getter.  As Madcapz describes on the postcard it’s “women’s fun colorful caps & visors.”  But it is so much more.  Madcapz is founder Carrie Bell’s own triumph over adversity.  But, we’ll let her tell you all about it.

THE FOURTH TEE: It is an honor to share your story and the story of Madcapz with the Fourth Tee public.  Tell us how you came to create Madcapz.

CARRIE BELL: Madcapz was created from a need I had. I was sick (from Grave’s Disease) and losing my hair and wanted a fun feminine cap to wear to cover my head. I searched in vain and couldn’t find one, so I decided to create them myself – and Madcapz was born!

TFT: How long ago was Madcapz created?

CB: 2006

TFT: What’s in a name?  By that I mean, what is the significance of the name “Madcapz?”

CB: There really is no significance other than it connotes a fun name for a fun product!  When I started to think of a company name, I played around with several names. Madcapz literally popped into my head one night when I was trying to sleep!

TFT: According to your site, Madcapz was primarily created for women suffering hair loss as a result of various medical ailments.  What has been the response/feedback from women so affected?

CB: Well, I’m not sure I set out to create Madcapz just for women with hair loss. I was certainly solving a problem that I personally had. But I did think women in general would love Madcapz – and they do! The absolute best part of my job is having women email us to tell us how much Madcapz has brightened their days while they are experiencing hair loss. We also get emails from people who have given Madcapz as a gift to those going through chemo or experiencing hair loss for other medical reasons – and I just love those emails!

TFT: Tell us about your “Pink” line and how people generally respond to it.

CB: Our Pink line became popular with women walking in various Breast Cancer events. We have teams who order pink Madcapz for their members for special Breast Cancer walk/run events.

Celebration

CB (Cont’d): Just want to mention that we also have a special teal Madcapz that we made for the HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation to help them in their fight against ovarian cancer. For every HERA Madcapz we sell, we donate $3 to the HERA Foundation.

TFT: Your site also markets Madcapz baseball hats as golf or tennis wear – and you even have visors – plus, you are also a licensed vendor of the Executive Women’s Golf Association (“EWGA”).  What was the genesis into the sportswear space? Was it just a natural progression?

CB: Although I started Madcapz because I was losing my hair and wanted a fun feminine cap to wear, I found fairly early on in this business that women golfers loved our caps. So, it really was a natural progression to expand into that market. Women golfers have great style and want to have fun on and off the course, so Madcapz are a terrific fashion accessory for golfers!

TFT: Do you play golf and/or tennis?

CB: I do play both tennis and golf, but am trying to focus my energies on golf. I actually began only a few years ago when I realized such a large percentage of my market are golfers! I love it, but it’s very hard to hit that little white ball where I want it to go :)

TFT: It’s also clear from your website you offer online shopping, but if my readers want to go to a physical store where they can experiment with, and try on, the various designs you offer, where can they go?  Are you in any major chains?

CB: We are in many small boutiques, hospital gift shops, oncology boutiques, golf retailers, golf pro shops, and gift shops all across the country. If someone wants to find a store near them, her best bet is to contact us and we can point her to the closest store/retailer that carries Madcapz.  I do want to tell you that our caps and visors have adjustable straps so that they fit most women’s heads comfortably.

Midnight Moon

TFT: What would you say is your best selling design?  And do you create new designs each season?

CB: Our animal prints have always been popular, but this season they are really hot! Also, our polka dot prints are always best sellers. We introduce a Spring collection and a Summer collection. Our Spring collection was just introduced this month and can be seen online at our website.

TFT: The Fourth Tee appreciates the opportunity to have this Q&A with you and is pleased to showcase some of your hats to our readers.  Thank you.
